How the difference changes with salary

2026/27 reference examples use monthly payroll, standard tax codes and no pension, loans, bonuses or benefits. They do not use your customised deductions. Positive values mean higher estimated take-home in Scotland; negative values mean lower estimated take-home. These are calculations, not a judgement about either tax system.

Scottish tax: what matters for your pay

Am I a Scottish taxpayer?

Status generally depends on your main home and connection to Scotland during the tax year, not nationality, birthplace or your employer’s location. Multiple homes or moving can require special rules. We do not infer your location. Check HMRC’s Scottish taxpayer guidance.

What changes—and what does not?

Scottish rates apply to relevant non-savings, non-dividend income, including employment pay. Savings and dividend rates remain UK-wide and are not modelled by this salary tool. Employee NI, pension rules and loan-plan selection remain separate. GOV.UK Scottish Income Tax.

Pensions and student loans

Salary sacrifice can reduce taxable, NI and loan earnings. Net-pay pensions reduce taxable pay, not NI or payroll loan earnings; relief-at-source pensions use provider relief and may need extra relief claimed from HMRC. Your loan plan does not change because Scotland is selected. Official pension-relief guidance.

Tax codes and annual estimates

The default Scottish code is S1257L. An S-prefixed code also selects Scotland; any conflict with the region selector is flagged. Non-standard codes estimate PAYE, not necessarily your final tax liability. This models steady pay for a full year, not residence changes or an exact payslip.
