Future pension salary-sacrifice NI changes

Not applied to this selected tax year. From 6 April 2029, pension salary sacrifice above £2,000 per tax year is due to attract employee and employer Class 1 NI on the excess. Income Tax relief and the reduction in adjusted net income are unchanged by this reform. This is not a pension contribution cap and does not apply to car salary sacrifice. Detailed payroll operation must be verified before implementation. HMRC reform details.

Benefit reporting and future changes

Use the reporting method for your selected tax year. Mandatory payrolling is announced for cars, fuel, vans and medical benefits from 6 April 2027, then most other benefits from 6 April 2028. HMRC benefit reporting dates.

Add the full employer-reported taxable value for Income Tax unless it is already represented in the tax code you entered. The reporting change is not a new tax exemption. If your code still contains an old benefit adjustment, check it with HMRC rather than changing the benefit value to compensate.

PAYE timing, prior pay, tax codes, rounding and employer scheme rules can change the payment month. Monthly equivalents average the bonus over the year; the bonus is not multiplied by 12.

Pension allowances, minimum wage, employer NI sharing and student-loan refunds are not assessed. Read the assumptions.

How the estimate works

Two calculations, one bonus difference

We calculate normal salary, then the same salary plus a one-off bonus using the main tax engine. The difference in take-home is the estimated net bonus. Cash bonuses are employment earnings, not subject to a separate bonus tax rate. GOV.UK bonus guidance.

Annual effect, not an exact payslip

Income Tax uses an annual estimate. NI and payroll loan deductions assign the bonus to one pay period at your selected payroll frequency. PAYE timing, previous pay, cumulative codes, loan refunds and employer rounding can change a payslip. The monthly equivalent is an annual average, not a recurring bonus.

Pension treatment is explicit

Bonuses are excluded from pensionable pay by default, matching the main calculator. You can include a percentage pension or enter a separate pension salary sacrifice from the bonus. Net-pay and relief-at-source contributions do not reduce employee NI-able pay. Extra relief at source may require an HMRC claim; the optional claim estimate is only supported for standard codes. Pension tax relief.

Limits and assumptions

This is educational, not personalised financial advice. Pension annual allowances, carry forward, minimum wage restrictions, employer NI sharing, loan balances/refunds and other Self Assessment income are not assessed. Benefit values and fixed deductions remain unchanged in both scenarios. Non-standard codes are PAYE estimates; statutory allowance information is separate. Historical blended-NI years are estimates.
