About your loan

Future pension salary-sacrifice NI changes

Not applied to this selected tax year. From 6 April 2029, pension salary sacrifice above £2,000 per tax year is due to attract employee and employer Class 1 NI on the excess. Income Tax relief and the reduction in adjusted net income are unchanged by this reform. This is not a pension contribution cap and does not apply to car salary sacrifice. Detailed payroll operation must be verified before implementation. HMRC reform details.

Benefit reporting and future changes

Use the reporting method for your selected tax year. Mandatory payrolling is announced for cars, fuel, vans and medical benefits from 6 April 2027, then most other benefits from 6 April 2028. HMRC benefit reporting dates.

Add the full employer-reported taxable value for Income Tax unless it is already represented in the tax code you entered. The reporting change is not a new tax exemption. If your code still contains an old benefit adjustment, check it with HMRC rather than changing the benefit value to compensate.

You repay 9% of relevant earnings above the Plan 4 threshold, not 9% of your entire salary. On £75,000.00 relevant annual earnings, £41,205.00 is above the annual threshold. The displayed repayment applies the selected payroll frequency and HMRC’s rounding rules.

At your current regular earnings, the unrounded marginal repayment rate is 9%: approximately £0.09 for each extra £1 of relevant earnings while the same thresholds apply. Undergraduate and postgraduate repayments are calculated independently. Whole-pound payroll rounding makes actual deductions change in steps.

This models one job with equal regular pay throughout the year. HMRC rounds weekly/monthly thresholds down to pennies and each deduction down to whole pounds. For two/four-week payroll, weekly earnings are averaged, the weekly deduction is rounded, then multiplied by the number of weeks. Monthly and weekly equivalents are annual totals divided by 12 and 52, not guaranteed payslip amounts.

Bonuses, irregular payments, start/stop notices, multiple jobs, protected-earnings orders and Self Assessment can change repayments. This does not calculate loan interest, balance, payoff date, write-off or refunds. Read the assumptions.

Understand your student-loan repayments

Which student loan plan am I on?

Your lender, where you normally lived when applying, course type and start date affect your plan. Your current Income Tax region does not determine it. You cannot choose the plan with the lowest repayment. Use your SLC account, repayment letter or GOV.UK’s plan guidance. Only one undergraduate payroll plan is selected here; SLC allocates repayments between any underlying loans.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Loans

A Postgraduate Loan can be repaid alongside an undergraduate loan. Each uses its own threshold and rate; the calculator shows both deductions and their total. Not all postgraduate study leads to a separate Postgraduate Loan—check your confirmed plan.

What counts as repayment earnings?

Payroll repayments use earnings subject to employer secondary Class 1 NI, even if you personally pay no employee NI. Qualifying salary sacrifice reduces cash earnings. Net-pay and relief-at-source pension deductions do not reduce the repayment earnings. Class 1 cash allowances or benefits can add to them; most non-cash Class 1A benefits do not. HMRC deduction guidance · Salary sacrifice rules.

Annual estimate, not every payslip

The model uses steady regular pay and the selected payroll frequency. HMRC rounds thresholds down to pennies and period deductions down to whole pounds. Annual totals can therefore differ from an unrounded percentage of annual excess income. Bonuses and irregular pay can trigger deductions even below an annual threshold. Monthly and weekly equivalents are not promised payslip amounts. Official repayment examples and refunds.

What this does not calculate

This estimates payroll deductions for one job, not loan interest, outstanding balance, lifetime repayment or write-off. It does not model multiple employers, start/stop notices, protected-earnings orders, irregular daily periods or Self Assessment repayments on other income. It cannot determine whether you should make voluntary repayments. Educational estimates, not personalised advice.

Different years and Scotland

Thresholds and plan availability come from the shared tax-year configuration. Plan 2 payroll repayments start in 2016/17, Plan 4 in 2021/22, Plan 5 in 2026/27 and Postgraduate Loans in 2019/20. Scottish Income Tax is selected independently from the loan plan. Historical repayment thresholds · Calculation methodology.
